Side Type Vs. Top Type Vs. Silenced Box Breaker – Which One Do You Actually Need?

"What's the difference? And which one should I buy?"

I get this question at least twice a week. A customer sends me an inquiry, lists their excavator model, and says they're looking for a hydraulic breaker. But when I ask which type they want – side, top, or silenced box – they're not sure.

It's a fair question. They all look similar from a distance. They all break rock and concrete. But once you understand the differences, the choice becomes pretty clear.

Here's my practical breakdown of the three main types – no marketing fluff, just what actually matters on the job site.

Side Type Hydraulic Breaker – The Versatile Workhorse

The side type breaker has its mounting pins located on the side of the breaker body. It's an open‑frame design, which means the main components are visible and accessible.

What it's good at:

Versatility – works well for general demolition, road breaking, trenching, and quarrying

Easy maintenance – because the sides are open, you can access the tool, bushings, and grease points without dismantling anything

Lightweight – compared to top‑type breakers of similar power, side types are usually lighter and more compact

Good visibility – the operator can see the tool and the work area clearly

Where it falls short: The hoses are more exposed on the sides, so there's a higher risk of damage in tight or debris‑filled environments. And because the impact is slightly offset, energy transfer efficiency is a bit lower than top‑type breakers – typically around 88‑93%.

Best for: General construction, urban demolition, and jobs where you need to move the breaker around frequently.

Side Type Hydraulic Breaker

Top Type Hydraulic Breaker – Maximum Power for Heavy Work

The top type breaker has its mounting pins at the top of the unit. The breaker hangs vertically from the excavator boom, and the impact force travels straight down through the tool.

What it's good at:

Maximum impact power – the straight‑line force path means minimal energy loss (95‑98% efficiency)

Excellent hose protection – the hoses run up the arm and are well shielded

Great visibility – the open frame gives the operator a clear view of the tool tip

Better balance – the centre of gravity is more aligned with the excavator arm, reducing stress on the boom

Where it falls short: Top‑type breakers are generally heavier than side‑types of similar power. They're also slightly more expensive due to the more complex mounting bracket.

Best for: Mining, quarrying, large‑scale demolition, and hard rock applications where maximum breaking power is the priority.

 

Top Type Hydraulic Breaker

Silenced (Box) Type Hydraulic Breaker – The Urban Choice

The silenced type – also called a box breaker or sound‑suppressed breaker – features a fully enclosed housing that wraps around the breaker body.

What it's good at:

Noise reduction – the enclosed box design can reduce operational noise by 35‑50%

Vibration reduction – the housing absorbs some of the vibration, which is easier on both the operator and the excavator

Body protection – the enclosed design protects the breaker from debris, dust, and impacts

Urban‑friendly – meets noise regulations for city job sites and night work

Where it falls short: The enclosed design makes maintenance slightly more involved – you may need to remove panels to access certain components. It's also heavier than an open‑frame side type.
